AdBlue And Your Van
If your van is Euro 6 compliant it will have AdBlue and you will need to keep your AdBlue topped up. If you don't you run the risk of your van grinding to a halt.
AdBlue is a fluid that is used with the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system to reduce exhaust emissions. This clear liquid consists of purified water and automotive urea. AdBlue is injected into the exhaust gasses of a diesel engine. The hot exhaust gases turn the AdBlue into ammonia then this neutrolises harmful NOx and converts into nitrogen and H2O. So basically the addition of AdBlue cleans up the NOx particles in a diesel vehicle before they are released into the air.
If your van has AdBlue you can check your owner's manual to help you to locate the AdBlue tank. It is more than likely going to be next to the fuel tank with the filler near of next to the fuel filler. Sometimes it is located in the engine bay on a van.
Unlike fuel AdBlue is not flammable and is non explosive making it a transportable fluid. Having said that when handling AdBlue you must wear protective gloves and glasses. If spilt AdBlue can cause damage to painted and plastic vehicle parts so be careful not to spill it whilst you fill your AdBlue and if you get any on your skin rinse thoroughly for at least 15 minutes, if unsure please seek medical advice.
AdBlue is easily available from most garages and online. Your van will warn you if your AdBlue is running low and needs topping up. Make sure you refill when prompted as if you fail to do this eventually your van just won't start.
Also running your AdBlue at low levels can reduce the power and speed of your van. It may also fail its MOT as it won't be able to produce low emissions. So AdBlue is an important part of your vehicle up keep.
