Builder’s back

If you’re in the trade, you will have no doubt heard of Builder’s back, if you have experienced it yourself or not. Heavy lifting and hours spent behind the wheel can take their toll on your back and with 70% of van drivers taking time off work due to back pain (according to Volkswagen) it’s time we did something about it. Here are some tips to minimise the strain on your back while driving…

Seat height – your knees should be parallel to the floor when you are driving. If your seat has a thigh support, you should adjust this too, so the majority of your thigh is resting on the seat.

Pedal position – you should be able to push the pedals down with a bend still in your knees.

The 110 goal – maintain a 110-degree angle between your back and thighs

Lumbar support – You should be able to feel the support in the hollow of your back without arching more than normal

Head restraint – align the support so it can tough the middle of the back of your head. It doesn’t need to touch at all times, but the support should be there when you need it.

Steering wheel – when you’re sitting comfortably, the steering wheel should line up with the fold of your wrist, to make for better posture when driving your van.

Rear mirror – this is a good little tip to try, when sitting in your seat, sit up straight so your chest lifts slightly. Adjust your rear-view mirror according to this and you will naturally sit up straighter while driving instead of slumping which is known to make back pain worse.

These are just some tips to ease builder’s back, if you are in pain it is important to seek medical advice. If you’re looking for your next van with a little more support for your back, find a used van in Warrington from the team at Cheshire Vehicle Supplies.
