EURO 6 Explained

What is Euro 6, why is it important and where can you get a compliant commercial vehicle? This article should explain everything you need to know about Euro 6.

What is Euro 6?

The European emissions standards were first introduced in 1992, with the aim of reducing the pollution levels generated by vehicles. Euro 6 refers to the sixth version of European emission standards which are the set of standards currently in use. The standards dictated that from 2015, all newly developed commercial vehicle models would have to be Euro 6 compliant.

Euro 6 standards target the following harmful emissions:

  • Nitrogen oxide (NOx)

  • Carbon monoxide (CO)

  • Hydrocarbons (THC and NMHC)

  • Particulate matter (PM)

The standards impose certain restrictions on manufacturers but they have also been adopted in cities in an attempt to make the air cleaner. London’s Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) is a well-known example of this but other cities are also introducing regulation zones, so if you are going to be driving through an unfamiliar city, make sure you check where the zones are in place and whether your vehicle is compliant.

Why are Euro 6 standards beneficial?

European emissions standards reduce the amount of vehicle pollution generated. The Euro 6 standards target gases including nitrogen oxide, which has severe implications for our environment and health, and particulate matter, which can cause serious breathing and pulmonary issues.

In addition to having health and environmental benefits, Euro 6 standards also bring good news for vehicle owners. With more manufacturers producing more refined engines, Euro 6-compliant vehicles offer better efficiency and fuel economy, which can save owners money.
