Insuring a modified van
If you’re looking at purchasing a modified van, or modifying a van you already have, it is worth knowing the dos and don’ts of insuring a modified van. Read our blog post to find out more.
Modified vans are often a great idea. They give you the freedom to drive and work in comfort, with some modifications proving to be very handy indeed. With additions like shelving and racking that will make your everyday life easier, it can be easy to forget that insuring a modified van is different to insuring a run-of-the-mill van.
To start with, let’s define what is classed as a modification. Anything that is changed after it has been manufactured is a modification, even down to alterations in the paintwork. While this is unlikely to affect the cost of your insurance, you must let your insurance provider know about the modification. Slightly pricier modifications when it comes to insurance would be; alloy additions, spoilers, internal racking and modified suspension.
The reason that your insurance will cost more is because it is based on risk. The more individual or unique your van, the more expensive it will be to replace or repair in the event of a claim. Whether the modifications are intended to improve performance or the aesthetics, both reasons come with added risk; accidents when relating to performance and theft when looking at aesthetics.
No matter how small the modification may seem and no matter how far through your current insurance period you are, it is vital that you contact your insurer immediately to notify them of the change. If you do not notify your insurance provider of the changes, it could make your insurance policy null and void.
Having said that, don’t let the insurance side put you off buying or modifying a van. Modifications can make great additions to your vehicle and improve organisation and performance for your business.
