Tyre Safety

Did you know that you are not insured when driving on illegal tyres!  If you are involved in an accident and your tyres have a tread depth lower than 1.6mm (legal limit in the UK), you could find yourself paying out a lot of money on repairs and fines.

Worn tyres also affect the performance of your van – low tyre tread depths reduce the effectiveness of braking, steering and acceleration.

Tyre Pressure

Tyres that are under inflated can overheat and over inflated tyres can lead to poor vehicle handling on the road. Having the correct tyre pressure is vital to the performance and handling of you van!

Over or under inflated tyres suffer more damage than those with the correct pressure and need to be replaced more regularly. Vehicles with under-inflated tyres have increased rolling resistance that require more fuel to maintain the same speed. So having the correct tyre pressure helps your wallet too!

Correct tyre pressures help to maintain optimum fuel efficiency. This can equate to lower Co2 emissions coming from your vehicle than those with incorrect tyre pressures and that has to be good for the environment.  Correct tyre pressure is great for the environment!

What You Should Check?

The TyreSafe.org has devised a five point tyre check that we strongly recommend you complete:

Check overall condition of tyres, including inner and outer sidewalls.

Check tyre tread depth.

Check all tyre pressures.

Check signs of irregular wear.

Check and examine the spare tyre.

There is a simple test you can do to test the tread depth of you tyres. Take a 20p and place it in-between the main grooves of the tyre. If you can see the outer band of the coin, the tyre may have insufficient tread depth. At this point, it is advised that you have your tyres checked over by a qualified mechanic.
