Using a van for business
Did you know that at any given moment, there are 3.5 million vans registered for business use across the UK? This number is set to grow over the next few years which shows just how important vans are in business. If you’re thinking about using a van in your business, read on to find out everything you need to know before making the purchase.
A van in business can be lifechanging. Whether you’re transporting goods or have paperwork to complete, a van can make all the difference when it comes to space, comfort and practicality.
With so many vans on the road, the DVSA stops around 13,000 LGVs (light goods vehicles – or vans) annually as part of its national roadside mechanical checks. If your vehicle does not comply with DVSA regulations, your van or LGV will be declared to be unroadworthy, which can also come with a pretty hefty fine.
Weight of your van
Remember that the weight of your van includes the van itself, all passengers and all goods you may have inside – including fuel too. To class as a van or an LGV, your motor must weigh less than 3.5 tonnes, if the weight is above this, you would require a different MOT class and operators licence, so it is crucial that the weight of your vehicle is under the set amount.
Daily Checks
It is important to do a walkaround of your vehicle before you start driving. This is to check for defects and damage which would need to be dealt with immediately to prevent you from encountering a dangerous situation.
Servicing
You must service your van as regularly as advised by the manufacturer. This is particularly important if the vehicle gets driven a lot and covers a high number of miles. It may be worth keeping a log of the work you’ve had done on your vehicle so you can keep track of everything in one easy-to-reach place.
It’s important to know that this list is not exhaustive of the criteria held by the DVSA. If you’re unsure, get in touch with the DVSA to find out more and to make sure that your van is compliant for business use.
